This mix comes under my eclectic category, where I let my mind go and follow lateral paths. I’ve been feeding my vinyl collection into my laptop and warping the tracks to fit a uniform beat, which gives me the freedom to mix more recent tunes with vintage classics and rare oddities. We start with a mellow summer vibe, a brief clip from the incredible ‘Windmill Tilter’ by Kenny Wheeler, which I’ve had the pleasure of playing in a big band project with Tim Garland, mixed with the floating ‘Images’ from Aquasky. which I first discovered via the Dope On Plastic series in the mid 90s. Then on to the mid 00s, with a record I picked up in Japan, more broken beats from Likwid Biscuit and ‘Herbs And Spice’. With my mind in need for a heavier spin, Fakesch’s Soda popped into my head, closely followed by ‘Good Enuff’, from Only Child’s excellent album Satellites And Constellations, further establishing the 80s-ish disco leanings. More funk levels needed now with The Olympians ‘Truth And Soul’, a heavy retro sounding soul tune with heavy horns perfect for the summer, closely followed by a snippet of ye olde jazz standard ‘How High The Moon’ you may recognize from the soundtrack to Casino. The mix finishes with a tune from our new EP, Natalie Williams featuring on a minimal house cover of Semisonic’s ‘Secret Smile’, followed by a classic piece of Level 42, ‘Starchild’, and a lovely acoustic vibe on Fink’s ‘Pretty Little Thing’, released on Ninja Tune a couple of years back.
